This Is The Dream

11/2017

Pretty, and Witty

Sweet, and Charming

Never Disarming

Agreeable

The curve of my lips

has but one wish

to land the kiss

of a Good Man

To settle down and have kids

to dote on, as we float on

our sturdy suburban home

which we pay for in instalments

in the hopes that one day

we’ll own this

This white picket fence

and double garage

to fit our two cars

and our two kids

in the backseat carseat

the fast beat

of our lives

the work spend repeat

I cook and I clean

this is the dream

this is the dream

this is the dream

we’re living the dream

a wife so alive

she has died inside

the glassy eyes

of the stepford wives

and the clean, white tiles

on the kitchen island

on the bedspread

a red spread

of petals on valentine’s day

30 years

of valentine’s days

I cannot go away

run, run away

I will stay

—-

there’s a skeleton in my closet

hidden, unbidden

between the folds

Designer clothes

I wasn’t always

Pretty, and Witty

Sweet, and Charming

once I was Disarming

Disagreeable

I was headstrong

never went along

with the flow

I had something to show for

independent

a dancer

shaking the remains

of the chains

that clamped on my spirit

and stamped on the sizzle of my soul

I am full of vim

and vigour

a zest for life

and all that I will do

and all that I will say

and all the thoughts that I might’ve thought

If only I wasn’t so —-

Pretty,

and Witty,

Sweet, and Charming,

never Disarming,

Agreeable.

the curve of my lips

has not one wish

content with the kiss

of a Good Man.
