2017 Student Council Candidates

6/2017

By Jackson Markow

As the body in charge of representing the interests of the students of Montpelier High School to the school's administration, including the faculty, staff, and school board, the MHS Student Council's members are elected every June by the students.  However, in order to fully understand the candidates before them, the students must understand the views and the mindset of those who they elect.  As John F. Kennedy said, "The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all."  And while ill-informed ballots may not put at risk the security of MHS, they certainly harm the effectiveness and reputation of the student council.  If elections devolve into little more than popularity contests (as some would argue they have), student council seats can be filled with disengaged and uninterested students, who participate little.  And when this happens, the student council can become mired in inefficiency, achieve little, fade into obscurity, and become disconnected from both the student body and the administration - the very two groups it is supposed to bring together.

Now I am not saying that that is what is happening with the MHS Student Council now.  Rather, I, and the Solon Spectrum seek to prevent it from happening in the future.  So if an ill-informed electorate is the gravest malady to any government, including student government, then what is its cure?  Information.  And that is exactly what we are providing to you here.  The Solon Spectrum has requested comment on a few core principles from all 18 candidates running in the 2017 election for the various offices of the MHS Student Council.  So before you vote on June 6, read up on your choices, decide which one represents you best, and vote accordingly!

The Solon Spectrum apologizes for the lack of photographs due to time constraints.

Student Council Executive Board

President

Omeed fallahi

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for this position because I believe that reforms need to be made to student council that will better allow for the voices of the student body to be heard. This is something I have heard many of my peers wish to see, and I believe that I can facilitate this shift to make student council more engaged with the MHS community.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

While my opponent is well-intentioned and qualified, I feel that I am more in tune with the general student body at MHS and am able to successfully represent different points of view - something I gained as a result of my steadfast experience on the debate team. I also feel that I have the ability to bring about change here at MHS, which I've proven through my experiences with other school clubs, such as leading the effort to design and order reusable water bottles for the Earth Group. If you have ideas for change at MHS and want your voice to be heard, there's only one candidate to vote for: your boy Omeed :)

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I like cats, wholesome memes, eating different types of delicious food, spending time with friends, and playing soccer.

What office are you running for?

If I get elected president I will bring Montpelier High School back bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make the school great again.

Why are you running for this office?

Our school is in serious trouble. We don’t have victories anymore. We used to have victories, but we don’t have them. When was the last time anybody saw us beating, let’s say, U-32? They kill us. I beat U-32 all the time. All the time.

When did we beat Spaulding at anything? We send our students to Barre Tech over by the dozens, and what do we do? When was the last time you saw a Spaulding kid in Montpelier? It doesn’t exist, folks. They beat us all the time.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

Because we have no protection and they have no competence, they don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast. U-32 and Spaulding, they’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us. They are not our friends, believe me. But they’re killing us athletically. Our school has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

Well, I play golf. I think of golf as a very natural game. I never really wanted to know a lot about my technique. I really trust instinct a lot, in golf and a lot of things.

jordan allen-brandon

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for this office because I enjoy being apart of my school community and I enjoy taking action. Although I am not running for a higher position, I still really want to be a part of the MHS community.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

I do really enjoy taking part in what MHS has to offer, and I care a lot about this school, and I hope the voters will see that too.

Sophomore Class

President

hope petraro

Why are you running for this office?

I'm running for [sophomore class] president because I'm a youth leader and I feel like I have a lot to offer my grade.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

This is something that I'm doing not just to put on my transcript.  It's something that I actually really care about.  I really care about making sure I represent my grade, and do enough work for them, and volunteer, and am a leader on Student Council.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I want more people to know about what is going on on Student Council, because I feel like a lot of students and student council members alike don't really know how Student Council interacts with the grade, and how they represent our grade and the high school in general.  So I want to make sure that the Student Council interacts more with its students.

violet tabacco

Why are you running for this office?

I want to represent what people actually want out of our school and to create a positive environment.  I care.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

What have the other sophomore class president candidates done to prove that they're qualified?  I'm committed.  How much do you know about what goes on in Student Council?  Nothing, right?  We're gonna make that change.

Right now, the student council isn't a very big focus of our school, and I want to make that change.  I personally know nothing right now about what goes on in student council, and I want to make that so its a more apparent thing in our school, and more open to our students, so that we're actually doing stuff that will benefit us and stuff that we actually know about.  Things that we want to happen.  Hopefully, we'll be able to publish updates of stuff we're doing in the Solon Spectrum.  Hopefully next year, we can focus on actually who would make a change for the school, rather that people who just think it would be something good to do.  Right now we don't even have any defining factor of what would make you good for student council for people to vote for you; its more of just a popularity thing,  And I want to change that so then it's actually people who will be doing it for the good of our school and community.

sarvesh sharma

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for office because I feel like my qualities would make me a good president.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

Voters should vote for me because I have the classes best interest at heart and would make the right decisions.

Vice President

juna nagle

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for this office to be a part of student council and have voting rights on the board for changes in our school. I met a lot of good people on the council and wish to continue my participation in the same position

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

I think that representation of our class that will soon to be sophomores is right for me because I feel that I have been connected to my peers and know that if there are any concerns that they can come to me without hesitation. After having this position last year I have had no complaints and think that my peers trust me enough to continue representing them.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I would like people to know that when being a part of the council means that we devote time and effort outside and inside of school to carry things out and that I am willing to do so and honor my commitments.

Junior Class

President

emma harter

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for this position because I believe that the MHS student council has the ability to affect real change in our community and school, and I would love to be a part of that change by representing my class.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

As a member of the 2016-2017 student council, I have come to learn that the student council has access to the tools to organize and lead, but very rarely takes the opportunity to do so (no shade). This coming year, if elected, I will work to ensure that the MHS student council reaches its full ability to make a positive impact on our school community. I will take care to truly represent the opinions of the Junior class.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I want my fellow classmates to know me as someone who is inclusive and actively seeks out diversity of thoughts. I will appreciate suggestions, thoughts or concerns about any system or problem that you see in our school community, and look forward to representing your ideas in student council.

max hughes

Why are you running for this office?

Because I wanted to.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

I vow to fight for the rights of students and later school start times.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I have a cat.

Vice President

appolonia tabacco

Why are you running for this office?

I believe I have the ability to make real changes to our school, and to be a reliable voice for my grade.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

I'm dedicated to improving the way student council is run, and I would love the support of my class to do so.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

I want to create a real sense of community within our school, and I want to be the person people can come to with concerns about the grading system, or anything else school related.

lilli curtin

Why are you running for this office?
I have always wanted to join student council but last year it sort of just ran right past me but this year a bunch of my friends in my grade and out of my grade said I should run for VP, that I would bring not only fun to student council but also good ideas.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?
I feel like I have good ideas for student council. I also have a very outgoing personality which makes it easy for me to become friends with people.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?
That I do love my grade and the sense of community in our school. I have also been in this school district since kindergarten and understand how things work within the high school specifically, as well as our our entire district.

Senior Class

President

jackson markow

(disclaimer: the author of this article happens to be the same person as this candidate)

Why are you running for this office?

To be quite honest, I am running for this office because nobody else was.  But that is not my underlying motivation.  My underlying motivation is to bring about change in a student council that I have seen in the past as ill-connected and lacking in function.  Some attribute this to the powerlessness of the council.  However, I see things the other way round.  I think the powerlessness and impotency of the council is a result of not the system in which it was created, but the council members themselves.  And, sure the system can be blamed to some extent, but I find that hard to believe when the very purpose of the student council is to shape that system.

So if I can change it from within, and make it so that at least a tiny fraction of the student population knows what the heck the council is doing, or comes to it with problems, concerns, or suggestions, that would be great.  And to increase the power of the Student Council so that it remains a strong and connected force in MHS even after I have gone would be better.  That is why I'm running for senior class president.

Why should voters choose you over your opponents?

Well I don't have any opponents, but if I did, it would be for the reasons above.  In short: everyone agrees that the Student Council is far from perfect.  This ^^^ is why I believe that is and how I want to fix it.  Nobody else has proposed to do the same.

Is there anything else voters should know about you?

In all areas of my life, I like to fix things that are broken.
